Compare what each route controls and what remains open

A side-by-side route table is more useful than asking which process is better. It forces each technical outcome into the order instead of treating process names as specifications. The entries below describe buyer questions, not universal performance. Actual achievable values depend on starting material, diameter, equipment, heat-treatment sequence, stock removal, length, handling, and the accepted product standard.

Do not add a chemical-composition or mechanical-property comparison to this processing decision. Peeling and grinding do not create different steel grades. Chemistry and properties remain controlled by the ordered grade, applicable product standard, delivery condition, section size, sampling, testing, and accepted order terms. Specify size, texture, straightness, and cleanup allowance independently

A surface route can meet one characteristic and miss another. Diameter, ovality or roundness, straightness, surface texture, waviness, lay, local discontinuities, residual stresses, and decarburization are different controls. Do not collapse them into 'ground finish' or 'precision peeled.' Select only the characteristics that affect machining, seals, bearings, coating, fatigue-sensitive geometry, or assembly, then give each one a limit and inspection basis.

For diameter, state the nominal value and tolerance system, not only a tolerance grade symbol without the applicable standard and size basis. Identify whether limits apply over the full length, exclude end zones, or are checked at defined stations. If ovality is restricted separately, state it. For straightness, define the maximum deviation over a gauge length or full length, the support and rotation arrangement if important, the inspection stage, and whether cropped ends are included. Long slender bars can be affected by handling and packing after measurement, so include receiving and transport expectations where critical.

ISO 21920-1:2021 addresses how profile surface texture is indicated in technical product documentation. Control surface quality and decarburization without overreading appearance

A bright visual surface is not proof of an agreed surface-quality class, absence of seams, or acceptable residual decarburization. ISO 9443:2018 specifies surface-quality classes for hot-rolled round, square, hexagonal bars and wire rod within its stated size scope and notes that it can apply to bright products when agreed at enquiry and order. Its public scope also says allowable decarburization depth is outside that document and points to ISO 3887 for measurement. This is exactly why the RFQ should keep surface discontinuities and decarburization as separate acceptance lines.

State which surface is examined, the condition at examination, class or explicit defect limits, examination method, coverage, sampling, permitted dressing, maximum local removal, minimum residual diameter, and report. Visual examination may be appropriate for one decision; magnetic-particle or another method may be required by a drawing or project specification for another. Do not add NDT by habit. ISO 3887:2023 describes methods for determining decarburization depth. The order still has to choose whether decarburization is controlled, the relevant depth definition, maximum allowed value, sample location, frequency, test condition, and report. Ask whether the requirement applies to the incoming hot-rolled material, the supplied peeled or ground surface, or the final heat-treated component. Those are different checkpoints and may give different purchasing consequences.

Protect the accepted surface after processing. Define separators, lifting or forklift contact, banding contact, rust-prevention material if required, wrap, bundle mass, and handling marks. A ground bar that meets its dimensional and texture requirements at final inspection can still arrive with banding dents, corrosion, or bend if packaging and receiving conditions are left open.

Turn the route into auditable RFQ and receiving wording

The worked line below is deliberately complete enough for a supplier to identify open items. It does not prescribe a universal tolerance, roughness, allowance, or straightness value. Replace the example with the drawing, product standard, licensed editions, actual downstream route, and receiving capability. Ask the supplier to return its starting size, proposed route, achievable supplied values, inspection extent, exclusions, and deviations with the quotation.

At order review, reconcile the supplier's quoted nominal size and tolerance with the buyer's minimum cleanup stock. Check whether heat treatment occurs before or after the controlled surface operation, whether straightening follows that operation, and whether the inspection stage matches the condition shipped.
